The Land Back Movement
Land Back is the name of a movement to rightfully return land back into the hands of Indigenous and Native peoples. This would allow for Native and Indigenous peoples to be able to care for and guide these land ecosystems, using sophisticated, nourishing, rejuvenating and restorative indigenous and native land stewardship practices. Returning land into the care of Indigenous/Native people would lead to many benefits including but not limited to: water protection, land protection, and the cultivation of biodiversity, which are all essential for the future of humanity.
A Brief Historical Note
The United States of America was founded upon genocide, White supremacy, brutality, oppression, and other colonial practices. Genocidal colonization and colonization practices also occurred by countries, such as but not limited to: the United States of America, England, and Spain (among others). These colonizing countries utilized cultural, spiritual, psychological, and physical genocides, in the attempt to destroy Native/Indigenous, African, Latin(x), Arab/Middle Eastern North African (MENA), Indian peoples, and other peoples. These genocides include their customs, cultures, languages, ways of life, and religions, through many diverse acts of harm, cruelty, and other forms of oppression.
The forced removal of Native Indigenous children resulted in extreme harm to Native family systems, the murder and death of countless children and adults, the loss of cultural practices and spirituality, and tremendous intergenerational trauma. There have recently been many investigations opened into the atrocities committed against the Indigenous and Native peoples.
Decolonizing means continuously learning and deconstructing history, ideologies, and many other dynamics. This also means continuously being self-aware of one's own capacity and ability for harm, while simultaneously holding oneself accountable and reckoning with your actions, thoughts, and mindsets. This also means working to repair, heal, make things better, and to work toward collective liberation for the individuals and groups who have been harmed and impacted historically and interpersonally.
